The Difficult Decisions That Define Leaders
The cost of leadership is paid in private.
Leadership looks like vision. It is mostly arithmetic with human beings in the equation.
Which project dies so the company survives. Which good person is not right for the role. Which truth the team can hold this quarter and which one would break them. Every one of those decisions has a person on the other side of it, and the leader carries the version of the story nobody else gets to hear.
The hardest ones are not right-versus-wrong. They are right-versus-right, decided with incomplete information, defended publicly, and doubted privately at 2am.
**The lesson:** Decide with your values, not your comfort, and then tell people the truth about how the decision was made. Teams forgive hard calls. They rarely forgive being managed around.
