The Difference Between Success And Fulfilment
Achievement is measured outside you. Fulfilment is not.
Success is legible. It can be listed, ranked, announced. Fulfilment cannot be shown to anyone, which is exactly why we chase the first and assume the second will follow.
It often does not. People reach the thing they spent a decade on and feel a strange flatness. Not ingratitude — just the discovery that the goal was carrying more emotional weight than a goal can hold.
The reason is simple. Success answers "did I do enough?" Fulfilment answers "did this matter to me?" They are different questions, and only one of them can be delegated to other people's opinions.
**The lesson:** Keep the ambition. Change the scorecard. Once a quarter, write down what you achieved and, separately, what you actually enjoyed doing. If the two lists never overlap, the problem is not effort.
